Holiday Travel in India - States and Interests

India is the world's largest democracy, consisting of 28 states and 7 union territories. The states are demarcated, broadly on the basis of the spoken language.

Himalayan North India consists of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand.These beautiful mountains welcome the spiritual and adventurous tourists. This area has many of the most popular hill stations and religious places. Kashmir is a honeymoon vacation paradise.

The Indian Plains consist of Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh. Delhi, the capital of India and a famous tourist destination, is part of this region. The mighty Ganga and Yamuna rivers flow through these plains.  

Western India consist of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Goa, Daman and Diu, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Goa and Rajastan are very popular tourist destinations.  Rajastan is home to miles of desert land, colorful palaces and enchanting forts and cities. Mumbai, formertly called Bombay is in Maharashtra. Bollywood, the Indian cinema capital is here. Goa is well known world over for wonderful beaches and pristine forests.

Andaman and Nicobar, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu make up the South of India. South India is famous for historical temples, beaches and back waters of Kerala, tropical forests and great cost lines. South India alone is a tourists paradise. Kerala, God's own country is a much sort after international destination.

Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim, West Bengal constitute  eastern India. Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of West Bengal and the biggest city in the east. Sikkim is famous for high altitude lakes, orchids and great treks in the Himalayas. The famous lord Jagannatha temple is in Puri, Orissa.

Assam is the gateway to the sensitive and remote North Eastern states of  Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura. This tribal belt of the country has beautiful Tea Gardens. Arunachal is famous for Orchids. There are many a destination and tour packages for the adventurous and the curious.
